Plus Size Bra Guide

The right bra changes everything - your posture, your silhouette, and your confidence. This guide covers how to find your perfect band and cup size, the best bra styles for fuller figures, and common fit problems (with fixes).

Understanding Plus Size Bra Sizing

A bra size has two components: the band size (the number - 38, 40, 42, etc.) and the cup size (the letter - B, C, D, DD, E, F). The band wraps around your ribcage and provides about 80% of the support. The cup holds the breast tissue.

Quick Measurement Guide

  1. Wrap a soft measuring tape snugly around your ribcage, just under your bust. Round to the nearest even number — that is your band size.
  2. Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level. This is your bust measurement.
  3. Subtract your band size from your bust measurement. Each inch of difference = one cup size (1"=A, 2"=B, 3"=C, 4"=D, 5"=DD, 6"=E, 7"=F).

Best Bra Styles for Plus Size Women

Full-Coverage Bra

Covers the entire breast with a higher neckline. Ideal for everyday wear and larger cup sizes. Provides maximum support and prevents spillage.

Balconette Bra

A slightly lower cut that lifts and shapes. Flattering under scoop-neck tops. Works well for B-F cups with wider-set straps for shoulder comfort.

Sports Bra

Compression or encapsulation styles reduce bounce during activity. Look for moisture-wicking fabric, wide adjustable straps, and a thick band. Check our plus size sports bra guide.

Bralette

Wire-free and comfortable for lounging, sleep, or low-impact days. Many plus size bralettes now feature supportive construction with mesh-lined cups.

Common Fit Issues & How to Fix Them

Band rides up in the back

Band is too loose. Go down one band size and up one cup size.

Straps dig into shoulders

The band is not providing enough support. Try a smaller band or wider straps.

Cups wrinkle or gap

Cup size is too large. Go down one cup size.

Spillage over the top of the cup

Cup size is too small. Go up one cup size, or switch to a full-coverage style.

Underwire pokes or sits on breast tissue

The cup is too small or the wrong shape. Try a larger cup or a different style.

Plus Size Bra FAQ

What is the most supportive bra style for plus size women?

Full-coverage bras with underwire and wide straps offer the most support for plus size women. Look for bras with three or more hook closures and side boning to minimise side spillage. Our plus size bras feature reinforced construction for all-day support in sizes S to 5XL.

How often should I replace my plus size bra?

Replace a bra every 6-12 months with regular wear, or as soon as the band stretches past the tightest hook and no longer feels snug. Plus size bras work harder to provide support, so the elastic may wear faster than standard sizes. Rotating between at least three bras extends their lifespan.

Why does my plus size bra ride up in the back?

A bra riding up in the back almost always means the band is too large. The band should sit level and snug around your ribcage on the loosest hook when new. Try going down one band size and up one cup size to maintain the same volume while getting a firmer fit.

Can I wear a bralette if I am plus size?

Yes. Bralettes can be comfortable and stylish for plus size women, especially for lounging or low-impact days. Look for bralettes with thick straps, a wide band, and structured mesh panels for light support. They work best for B-D cups; larger cups may prefer a wireless bra with more structure.

What is sister sizing and how does it work?

Sister sizing means the cup volume stays the same when you go up a band size and down a cup size, or vice versa. For example, a 42D has the same cup volume as a 44C or 40DD. This is useful when a bra brand runs large or small in the band, or when your size falls between two band sizes.
