Plus Size Sports Bra Guide

The right sports bra lets you move freely, train harder, and feel supported no matter the workout. This guide covers support levels, sizing, fabrics, and how to find a sports bra that actually works for your body.

Sports Bra Support Levels

Low Impact

Gentle compression for minimal bounce. Best for yoga, Pilates, walking, and stretching.

Recommended for: A-D cups

Medium Impact

Moderate support for activities with some bounce. Best for cycling, hiking, weightlifting, and dance.

Recommended for: B-E cups

High Impact

Maximum support with encapsulation and compression. Best for running, HIIT, aerobics, and jumping.

Recommended for: C-F cups & all plus sizes

Plus size tip: If you are a cup size C or larger, we recommend medium or high-impact sports bras even for low-impact activities. The additional tissue weight means you need more support than the activity level alone would suggest.

What to Look for in a Plus Size Sports Bra

Wide, Padded Straps

Distribute weight across the shoulders and prevent digging. Adjustable straps let you dial in the perfect support level.

Thick Band with 3+ Hooks

A wide band (3+ inches) provides the foundation of support. Multiple hooks allow adjustment as the bra stretches over time.

Moisture-Wicking Fabric

Nylon-spandex blends pull sweat away from the skin. Mesh panels in high-heat zones improve airflow during intense workouts.

Encapsulation Cups

Individual cups support each breast separately, reducing bounce more effectively than compression alone. Essential for D cups and above.

Racerback or J-Hook Option

Racerback styles keep straps from slipping during overhead movements. Some bras convert between standard and racerback with a J-hook.

Front or Side Closure

Easier to put on and take off than pullover styles - especially important after a sweaty workout. Also allows size adjustment.

Sports Bra FAQ

What sports bra support level do I need for running?

Running requires a high-impact sports bra with encapsulation cups (each breast is supported individually) rather than compression-only styles. For plus size women, look for underwire or moulded cups, wide padded straps, and a band with at least three hooks. This minimises bounce and prevents tissue damage during high-impact movement.

Can plus size women wear compression sports bras?

Yes, but compression bras work best for low to medium impact activities like walking, yoga, or weightlifting. For high-impact activities, compression alone may not provide enough support for cup sizes C and above. Combination bras (compression + encapsulation) offer the best of both styles for fuller figures.

How tight should a plus size sports bra be?

A sports bra should feel snug without restricting breathing. The band should not ride up when you raise your arms, and the straps should stay in place without digging. You should be able to fit two fingers under the band comfortably. If red marks remain more than 15 minutes after removing the bra, it is too tight.

How often should I replace a sports bra?

Replace a sports bra every 6-9 months if you work out 3-4 times per week, or after approximately 72 washes. Sports bras lose up to 40% of their support over time as the elastic degrades. If the band feels looser on the tightest hook or you notice increased bounce, it is time for a new one.

What fabric is best for a plus size sports bra?

Moisture-wicking fabrics like nylon-spandex blends are best for plus size sports bras. Avoid 100% cotton, which absorbs sweat and stays wet. Look for mesh panels in high-sweat areas (between the cups, across the back) for airflow. Antimicrobial treatments help prevent odour between washes.
